'DEEPEST WOUND' [A NOVEL] – PART IV: THE SUSPICION

All through the night, Jide had been sleep talking. This got his wife disturbed.  He’s been behaving strangely since he came back home the previous day. At one point into the night, he was awakened by a nightmare. He had seen a group of girls carrying him on a stretcher at a beach side. They got to a point where a pit was dug. And he was lowered into it. As the pit was being covered, he woke up.
“You’ve been acting strangely since you got back home yesterday.” His wife told him
“I see…” he responded
“My love is anything wrong?” she asked
“No” he replied.
“Did you get to see Kunle?” she asked further
“Yes I did”
“So what did he say?”
“It’s okay Jite; the test result just showed I have malaria and typhoid. That’s all and I think you should stop questioning me.”
“I’m sorry Jide, it’s just that…”
“Jite, I need to start getting set for work. And you too should start getting the kids ready for school, or aren’t you going today?”
On her way back from work with the children, Onajite stopped by Kunle’s clinic.
“Kunle I’ve known you since I got married to Jide and I believe if there is anything wrong with my husband I’d expect you to let me know”
“How do you mean?” Kunle asked
“Since my husband returned from the clinic, he’s not been himself?”
“Do you think it has anything to do with his visit here?” Kunle asked.
“That is why I’m here. He told me the result indicated malaria and typhoid but his behaviour…Kunle, I don’t know. I think there is something wrong some where, and my husband does not want me to know”
“Jite, why not let him be for now, may be with time he’ll let you know if he can not deal with it.”
“He’s my husband. And I want to be there for him at all times, good or bad. Kunle is there anything you’re not saying?”
Kunle smiled and told her not to work herself up. He tried to assure her that he’d be the first person to let her know if anything was wrong.
“I don’t think that Jide’s behaviour has anything to do with his visit here. I’ll talk to him and if there is anything serious, I’ll let you know. Trust me?”
Jite left Kunle’s office disappointed. She knew he was hiding something from her. Kunle and Jide have been best friends from their childhood and are known to be undeniably loyal to each other. Kunle was Jide’s best man on their wedding day.
Except a person is told, both friends are known as cousins. They do not hide things from their wives but when it has to do with their infidelity, it is strictly kept to themselves. Kunle was not in support of his friend’s infidelity and told him so to his face.
Immediately Onajite left his consulting room, he called Jite on his mobile.
“Dude, we need to talk” He said.
“About what if I may ask? Jide asked.
“Your wife just left my office”
“What does she want?”
“Jide this is not what we should discuss on phone.”
“Ok so where will that be, your house?”
“No. let’s meet at mama cee’s treasure bar”
Jide sighed and agreed to meet Kunle at 6:oopm
