NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT HONOUR LATE MKO ABIOLA, GANI, SAYS JUNE 12 RELACES MAY 29 AS DEMOCRACY DAY
President Muhammadu Buhari has honoured MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election annulled by then military president, General Ibrahim Babangida.
He was honoured with a posthumous award for the highest honour in the country as Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR reserved for presidents.
His Vice Presidential candidate, Baba Gana Kingibe was honoured with the second highest honour of Grand Commander of the Niger, GCON along with the late Human Right activist and legal luminary, Chief Gani Fawehinmi.
In a press statement personally signed by the president Muhammadu Buhari and dated Wednesday, 6th June and shared on his twitter handle @MBuhari,
the president said June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day. According the president, June 12 was far more symbolic of democracy in the Nigeria context than May 29 and October 21st.
