NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS, EX-UNION LEADERS, PROTEST RUSTICATION OF UNIBEN SUG PRESIDENT

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS and ex-union leaders  stormed the University of Benin on Monday to protest the rustication of 5 students as punishment for leading students to a peaceful protest against the institution’s management over increment in school charges.

The 5 members are ,

1. Ogbidi Osemudiamen SUG PRESIDENT rusticated for one session
2. Aidenagbon Justus SUG SEC GEN

Rusticated for one session
3. Ehiabhi Goodnews SUG PRO

Rustiated for two sessions
4. Innocen Momodu Ehiz SUG ASG

Rusticated for one session

The management of the University led by the vice chancellor Prof.  Faraday Orunmwense believes the students carried at the protest in bad faith to disrupt the 47th Founders Day and Convocation Ceremony last year November.

The management of the institution said the Student Union Government led by Loretta had agreed on the charges but the new SUG government had rejected the increment.

SIT AT HOME PROTEST

NANSstormed the school on Monday and mobilised the students for a sit at home protest to call for the unconditional reinstatement of of the union officials.

There were a few disruption of classes on Tuesday but the sit at home didn’t  work.  Majority of the students had welcomed the protest but feared some students would boycott it which was so and this prompted them to rush down to receive their lectures.

However,  the students were angry with the management.  They were unanimous in condemning the act and hoped that some prominent persons will intervene.

Some wondered why leaders they voted for would be removed for fighting on the side of the students as that was why they were voted for.

SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN

students of the University for fear of either being victimized or having another closure choose to use the social media to press for the reinstatement of their leaders.

They trended the hashtag #EnoughisEnough and #bringbackourleaders on twitter, whatsapp and Facebook.

PROMINENT CITIZENS INTERVENE

7Sofar some prominent citizens are intervening in the matter as reports have it.  They have been holding talks with the vice chancellor.

A report from a close source said as it stands,  the management said it is willing to reinstate the suspended students only if they write an apology but the students believe it is a ploy to make them agree to being guilty of a no crime action and that has implications which the students are studying carefully.
